Welcome and here we go

(Pre-apologies for typos or occasional ramblings; I have a wee bit of dyslexia, and I tend to talk in chapters...Tweets are not my style. Just roll with me here, I'm not a Yale English professor. If you comment, just please keep it civil and polite.)

I have no idea where or how these postings will go, or if anyone will ever read them. Expect a collection of stories, what is happening in my life, some tech, music (I use to be a disco DJ, vinyl 12" singles in college) and I'll probably touch on dog topics.

BTW, feel free to ask dog questions and I'll see what I can do.

First, can anyone name the breed of my avatar? And if you know her name, you know me.

I've been involved with IT (use to be called computer science) since college where I used an IBM 370/158 mainframe with 80-character punch cards (number sound familiar?); Gen X'ers and Millennials may not know what a keypunch machine was or that computers use to run batch jobs, 67MB disk drives were the size of a Whirlpool clothes washer or that the Internet was originally designed by DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) in 1967 by a twenty-something Vinton Cerf (you CERF the Internet not SURF...just Google Vinton Serf if you want to know more about him) to allow the federal government, defense contractors and universities to remain in contact in the event of a nuclear war with the USSR. The Internet was not about Amazon, social media, Tweeting or porn, well, OK, the first JPG sent via the Internet was reportedly a Playboy centerfold model back in the early 1970s.

I've had dogs (as an adult) since 1985 when a friend could no longer keep his (long story): 29" at the withers and 120 pounds, 18 months old, mixed working class dog. Mogul was my buddy. I took him with me anywhere I could. He only knew kindness. I had him for 12 years, and I miss him dearly. We use to watch the Westminster Kennel Club Show on USA Network. Who knew that in 15 years, I'd be showing a terrier at Westminster; showing dogs is like falling down a rabbit hole in a Lewis Carol story....more on that later. I will say, showing dogs opened a huge part of my last 21 years. Some people golf. Some people take cruises. I Show Dogs.

No kids. Dogs are a huge part of my life, an important part. Dogs are NOT children. They are dogs and that in itself is wonderful and I am part of their pack. And, if you have dogs, have two. They are pack animals and I just refuse to put a sock in my mouth to play tug.

Two dogs are not that much more work than 1, other than 2x the food and vet care. Don't get a dog for "the kids"; dogs are an adult responsibility for those who have the time to make them a part of the family and their pack. If you can't afford quality food, vet care and time for your dogs, don't get one, period. Don't just lock them outdoors. Don't ignore them. They need care, love and proper attention. As Alton Brown would say "You'll be rewarded."

Well, that's it for tonight. Hope I get a following. If I don't this will be good release for me to express myself, and that works.

Forever Mogul's Dad
